"Friendsgiving" by Nancy Siscoe

The leaves are falling, the air is crisp, and Berry, Ginger, and Willow are enjoying the delights of fall. When these old friends join with new friends to bask in the bounty of the season, there is a lot to be thankful for—and a new tradition is born . . . Friendsgiving!

Visit https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TKip76O-xEE to watch the author read her story for #HarperKids. Then, enjoy the activities. Everything is yours to keep!

HANDOUT GAMES – play with included apple handouts

Can You Show Me…?

(Tune: “Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush”)

Can you show me the red apple?

Red apple, red apple?

Can you show me the red apple?

And wave it in the air?

Yellow… blue… green… orange

Hold It High – Choose one apple from handouts

Hold your apple high and stand

Now wave it around in gestures grand!

Hold your apple below your chin

Now hold it way up high again

Hold your apple against your nose

Now touch the apple to your toes

Touch your apple to the ground

Now wave that apple all around!

Hold your apple in front of you

Now turn around – one time, two!

Hold your apple and jump up high!

Now let your apple fly fly fly (throw it in the air)

SONGS & INSTRUMENT – use included instruments

BOUNCE RHYME (bounce along with child in lap)

If You’re Thankful and You Know It

(tune: “If You’re Happy and You Know It”)

If you’re thankful and you know it, clap your hands.

If you’re thankful and you know it, clap your hands.

If you’re thankful and you know it,

Then your face will surely show it.

If you’re thankful and you know it, clap your hands.

If you’re thankful and you know it, bounce up high…

If you’re thankful and you know it, swing down low…

ACTION RHYMES

Let’s Be Thankful for this Day

(tune: “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Stars”)

Let’s be thankful for this day,

For our friends and our play.

Let’s be thankful, let’s be glad,

For our food and the things we have.

Let’s give thanks for you and me,

And our home and family.

The Turkey Pokey

You put your right wing in

you put your right wing out

You put your right wing in

And you shake it all about.

You do the turkey pokey

And you turn yourself around.

That’s what it’s all about.

Left wing

Drumsticks (legs)

Stuffing (tummy)

Wattle (head)

Tail feathers (bottom)

Turkey body (whole self)

Over the River and Through the Wood

Over the river and through the wood

To Grandfather’s house we go.

The horse knows the way

To carry the sleigh

Through white and drifted snow.

Over the river and through the wood --

Oh, how the wind does blow!

It stings the toes

And bites the nose,

As over the ground we go.

Over the river and through the wood

To have a first-rate play.

Hear the bells ring,

Ting-a-ling-ling!

Hurrah for Thanksgiving Day!

Over the river and through the wood,

Trot fast, my dapple gray!

Spring over the ground

Like a hunting hound,

For this is Thanksgiving Day.

Over the river and through the wood,

And straight through the barnyard gate.

We seem to go

Extremely slow --

It is so hard to wait!

Over the river and through the wood --

Now Grandmother’s cap I spy!

Hurrah for fun!

Is the pudding done?

Hurray for the pumpkin pie!
